The
digital age has changed everything in the world of photography. Most attribute
this to the implementation of digital cameras. We forget that if it weren’t
for social media, photographers would still be dependent on printed images to
reach potential clients. Social media has widened the door created by the
digital camera. The ability to spread images so efficiently gives amateurs
quick recognition in a public space that isn’t conducive to negative criticism. Which had grown a large
spread of “professional” photographers. Giving people a wide
array of options.
With
the evolution of social media, I can reach thousands of people in a matter of
hours, I don’t have to
wait for the whispers of my talent to spread. This fast and affordable form of
advertising allows me to get feedback from my followers and instantly see what
types of work people respond to. But easy come, easy go - as quickly as images
are seen and liked, they are quickly forgotten. They fall behind other posts,
covered up with pregnancy announcements, complaints of too much homework, and
the occasional scathing review of the newest Michael Bay movie.
Vigilance
is required to maintain a presence on Facebook. I can’t justify paying
a person to manage my online presence. I often don’t realize how much time I spend maintaining my online
presence. Twenty years ago the only tools photographer had to build a client
base were print advertisements and word of mouth. It might still take some time
to build a significant client base but once a reputation is established the
only thing necessary to sustain it is to keep churning out quality work that
keeps clients happy.
I’ve grown up in social media
world. MySpace was first place I received positive feedback on my images. I
blame my fairly recent acquisition of a smart phone for my limited Twitter and
Instagram following. Even though social media requires some work, I feel like
the benefit of obtaining clients that choose Traughber Photography primarily
because they like the aesthetic I offer makes it worth the work.
